Not all sports car drivers want to compete in track day events, with fast but comfortable a greater priority for many. With this in mind, German car magazine sport auto used two vehicles for its 2021 summer tyre test. The chosen duo were the Toyota Supra and BMW Z4, cars that share a platform and come equipped with the same-sized tyres, but are developed to satisfy different customer requirements.

This March we are introducing the inaugural WhatTyre Tyre of the Year Awards – an authoritative ranking of the best tyres out there. This starts with publishing our nominations of the highest-performing tyres across six key categories, namely: summer, winter, all-season, UHP, SUV and electric vehicle-orientated tyres. The length of each list differs in each category because of the range of tyre manufacturers and products in each segment, but every list has been scrutinised just as closely. The long-lists will be followed by our recommended short-lists as well as, of course, category winners. Occupying the two top spots in 2020, superminis are well-represented in UK registration figures. But auto motor und sport (ams) notes that testers tend to overlook the tyres they wear in favour of wider, sportier models. The German car magazine has addressed this paucity of test data by examining 11 tyre brands in size 195/55 R16H.

A set of UHP tyres can cost more than a grand or less than half that, but you get what you pay for. This is what Auto Bild Sportscars found in its latest tyre test – the pricier tyres nudged the top end of the results table, while the two cheapest brands were also by far the worst performers.

When browsing tyre test results it’s sometimes easy to gain the impression that the same premium brands dominate proceedings. But this isn’t always the case. Auto Bild has released the results of its 2021 summer tyre test, and the biggest names in the business needed to clear space on the top step of the winners’ podium for an ambitious competitor. The runner-up premium tyre was also given a run for its money by the third-placed candidate, a lower-priced product from the same manufacturer.

In its 2021 summer test, Auto Bild Allrad looks at ten brands of SUV tyres, from a premium product costing £450 for a set of four to a budget tyre almost half the price. On the whole, the test team was impressed with the candidates’ performance and declared six of the ten products either ‘exemplary’ or ‘good’. They declined to recommend just one tyre.
