Motoring association recommendations: 16-inch tyres

The 2022 summer tyre tests performed by motoring organisations in Austria, Germany and Switzerland evaluated a total of 34 tyres, in 185/65 R15 88H as well as the 215/60 R16 99V size for compact SUVs that we’re looking at here. In its reportage, German association ADAC shares that recent progress in tyre development was evident in the test candidates, and it is thus in the happy position of recommending almost all of the tyres.

Dr Reinhard Kolke, the ADAC’s director of test and technical services, calls this a “very pleasing” result and says that a high level of recommendations “shows the outcome of our almost 50 years of testing practice.” Kolke believes that tyre tests such as those conducted by the ADAC, ÖAMTC and TCS guide tyre makers and provide them with feedback for improving products on an ongoing basis. “In this way, the ADAC has been helping to make tyres safer and safer for decades.”

ADAC fitted the 18 brands of size 215/60 R16 99V tyres to a Skoda Karoq for testing and rated how they perform on dry and wet roads as well as for economy, mileage, noise and comfort. It found five of the tyres ‘good’ and a further 12 as ‘satisfactory’. Just one tyre finished the test as ‘adequate’ – and all avoided the lowest ‘unsatisfactory’ rating.
