The Formula 1 teams have delivered a firm rejection to exclusive tyre supplier Pirelli. They unanimously decided not to adopt Pirelli’s proposed 2020 tyre specification in an FIA vote today. As a result, F1 will continue to use the 2019 tyres next season.
Pirelli told us that the FIA decision does not affect any future tyre developments. Pirelli plans to supply 18-inch tyres in the 2021 season. It has worked with Mercedes, Renault, Williams, and McLaren to test development versions of these tyres during in-season tests this year.
The FIA stated that it “would like to thank both Pirelli and all the teams for their work and collaboration to improve the tyres for the 2020 season and beyond. In any case, the lessons leant will be invaluable for the further improvement of the tyres in the future.”
