Did you know Lego is crafting eco-friendly tyres?

You might think of Bridgestone or Michelin when it comes to tyres, but guess what? Lego actually churns out more tyres by volume than anyone else! And now, they’re hitting the road to sustainability by making tyres from recycled fishing nets, old ropes, and even used engine oil.

Lego’s taking discarded ocean nets and ropes, mixing them with recycled engine oil, and turning them into tyres that cut down on the need for new fossil fuels. Starting with seven tyre designs, each one has at least 30 per cent recycled stuff baked in. They’re already rolling out in Lego sets, and you’d never guess they’re different from the usual ones. By the end of 2025, Lego plans to pop these green tyres into about 120 different sets and keep pushing to use more recycled materials in even more tyre styles.

This is all part of Lego’s big plan to make their bricks, packaging—and yep, tyres—kinder to the planet. Annette Stube, Lego’s sustainability boss, told Tyrepress.com: “…Over the past five years, we have invested significant time in developing and testing this new recycled material to ensure it meets our high standards for quality, safety, and durability. The tyres are just one of many options we’re working on to make our products more sustainable and it’s encouraging to see something this innovative making it into our sets.”

So, next time you’re out for a drive, think about how even tiny tyres are getting a sustainable spin.
